XL Semi manufacture a series of switched voltage regulators that are price competitive with industrial standard regulators, but have specifications that compete with more advanced proprietary regulators. They are commonly found on voltage converter modules sold on Chinese e-commerce websites. Makers commonly use these modules and as result it is convenient for makers to use these regulators in their own PCB designs.
The XL4016 is a high efficiency buck converter with a relatively high output power. Use the XL4016 if you prefer the through hole TO220 package over the surface mount TO263 package used by the XL4005/XL4015, or if you need the 8A current capability (you may want to mount it to a dedicatd heat sink in that case).
