Description

Bottom-access update — 11 September 2026

11 September 2026 — v04-bottom-access: removed the two narrow bridges between the USB-C opening and the side service windows, joining the bottom access openings. Lid and all other mesh geometry are unchanged. Actual-device alignment, acoustics, cable clearance and strength still need physical testing. Existing gallery renders are kept; they do not show this underside change.

External-source remix: the original works are on Printables and Sketchfab, not Thingiverse. Both authors and source links are credited below.

Work in progress — v04-bottom-access

Physically unvalidated prototype. No printed part or actual-device fit test has been completed. Digital mesh checks do not prove fit, retention, charging performance or keyring strength. Do not rely on this untested cover to carry your AirPods.

What changed in v04

v04 adds fuller rear wrap-around coverage with hinge-motion relief, a bounded front window, joined USB-C / side service openings, and five seats for separately supplied soft retention pads (two body sides, two lid sides, one roof). Bare rigid shells remain unretained. Initial 0.80 mm soft silicone foam is a trial, not a validated specification; pad thickness, compression, finish compatibility and any removable roof adhesive require physical testing. No positive lid lock is claimed.

116 sampled hinge poses from 0–115° pass the calibrated-surrogate collision screen, including illustrative seated pads. This is a digital clearance check, not a simulation of friction or proof of real-device fit, retention, charging or keyring strength.

A two-piece Clawd-inspired outer cover for the existing AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation charging case. It includes recessed eyes, rear andreabalbo.com pixel engraving, hinge relief, joined USB-C / side service openings and a rounded diagonal 4 mm keyring bore in the viewer-right block.

All images are CAD renders, not photographs of a successful print. The device and metal ring are illustrative and are not print parts. The ring attaches only to the cover body: it does not lock the AirPods case or separate lid.

Files and printing

Use the v04-bottom-access body and lid STLs, or the matching two-object 3MF. Old download files have been replaced. The lid geometry is unchanged but is supplied with the matching update name. Do not mix revisions. Pads and ring are separate hardware, not printed parts.

Print one body and one lid. Use either the two STLs or the two-object 3MF, not both. Units: millimetres, 100% scale. The 3MF is mesh-only, not a validated printer profile.

  • Body: 75.78 x 26.90 x 42.40 mm.
  • Lid: 62.00 x 26.90 x 16.50 mm.
  • Closed plastic assembly: 75.78 x 26.90 x 59.60 mm, excluding ring.
  • Nominal cavity offset: 0.35 mm from a visual surrogate, not measured OEM CAD.
  • Rear engraving: nominally 1 mm deep.

Unfilled PA12 via MJF/SLS is a candidate for an unpainted first prototype, not a qualified specification. Ask the printer to review thin walls, finished cavity tolerances, engraving and the ring hole. No validated FDM layer height, infill or support recipe is available. Test real-device fit, removal, lid retention, hinge travel, charging, temperature and keyring wear before finishing or carrying use. Terracotta/orange and black eyes are color intent only.

Editable source and rebuild

The attached v04-bottom-access source ZIP includes the updated Blender model, patch/export script, validation report and original construction sources. GitHub below remains the original v04 baseline before this bottom-access update:

Original baseline release (not this bottom-access update):

https://github.com/andre94/clawd-airpods4-anc-case/releases/tag/v0.4.0-alpha

A clean rebuild with Blender 5.2.1 LTS and the two included open reference assets reproduced both v04 STLs byte-for-byte. Blender and Python are sufficient; no AI account, Codex or MCP server is required to rebuild. This is digital reproducibility, not physical qualification. Measured fit reports and improvements are welcome.
