End Mill Mount for 5th Axis Retrofit

Description
NEMA 34 End Mill Mount for 5th Axis Retrofit
This is a mounting solution designed to allow you to add a 5th axis capability to your vertical milling machine. This mount is designed to hold an end mill spindle/motor assembly, specifically utilizing a NEMA 34 form factor (stepper or servo).
Description
This project allows for the integration of a secondary rotary or tilt axis on a standard vertical mill. The mount provides a rigid interface to attach your motor/spindle to the machine table or an existing fixture plate.
Bill of Materials (BOM)
To complete this assembly, you will need the following hardware:
* Motor: 1x NEMA 34 Stepper Motor or Servo Motor
* Fasteners: 4x M6 Bolts (minimum 50mm length)
* Mounting Hardware: T-Slot bolts (sized to fit your specific machine table)
Requirements
* Machine: Vertical Milling Machine (to machine the mount or the interface plates)
* Machining Capability: You will need the ability to drill and tap holes to match your specific T-slot spacing.
Assembly Notes
1. Mounting: Use the T-slot bolts to secure the base of the mount to your mill table.
2. Alignment: Ensure the NEMA 34 mount is squared to your spindle. Depending on your setup, you may need to shim the base to achieve perfect alignment.
3. Fastening: Use the 4x M6 bolts to secure the motor to the mount. Ensure they are tightened evenly to prevent binding.
Printing Recommendations
* Material: Recommend using PETG, ABS, or ASA for better thermal stability and rigidity. PLA is not recommended due to potential heat buildup from the motor and milling environment.
* Infill: 40-50% minimum (or higher if using a dense pattern like Gyroid) to ensure structural integrity under cutting forces.
* Perimeters: At least 4-6 walls to provide sufficient strength for the bolt holes.
* Supports: Required depending on your orientation, but try to print in a way that minimizes support material inside the bolt channels.
Disclaimer: This is a DIY component. Ensure all fasteners are tight and your machine is properly grounded before operation. Always wear appropriate eye protection.
