Description

This is intended to be used in a Amiga 1200 or Amiga 600 with a PiStorm installed, its RF modulator removed and its hole not used.

The Raspberry Pi in any of those systems has an on-board WiFi antenna, but the RPi is surrounded by metal (mainly the keyboard and the disk drive), so signal quality will be poor at best (2 over 5). I'm using a CM4+carrier in a A1200, and it has an U.FL antenna connector. I tried a short internal antenna, but the problem with all the metal surrounding it remains, the gain is very small, the quality fluctuates between poor and good (2-3 over 5), and it usually drops once connected.

So I thought of an external one using the available rear RF hole, connecting it with a long cable to the CM4. I've used a 40 cm cable, but it goes a bit tight, so a 50 cm one would be better.

It's a two-pieces solution, one in the inside of the A1200, the other one in the outside, fastened together by the antennas's bolt and nut.

There's two versions of the inner side, one for the plastic case alone, the other one for the case with the internal metal shield: the hole in the metal shield is a little bit smaller.

Once installed, my WiFi signal stays in the range of "very good/excellent" (4-5 over 5) with the small antenna -not longer than an index finger- you can see in the photos. I guess you can get better/susteined quality with a bigger antenna (I have not tried it yet).
